Fear

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

1Timothy 1:6-7 ESV

Think for a moment about some of the major decisions that you made today at work, or home, or with friends and family.  Think about all the factors that went into your decision.  If you are like most, one of the regular factors that guide your decision making is fear.  What will other people think of me, how will this impact my relationships, will this work, will it hurt?

God, our creator, knows us well, and leaves us with this encouragement.  This comes from 1Timothy, a letter from the master Paul to apprentice Timothy.  Timothy was young, and a new leader in the Christian church.  Paul knew that Timothy might have uncertainties, and God in his infinite wisdom gave this reminder to Timothy and Paul.

You were not given a spirit of fear, but of power, love, self-control.  You were not given a spirit of fear, not because of what you can do, but because of what God can do.  A Spirit that understands we worship a God who created this world, knitted you in your mother’s womb, and carefully placed people, places, and experiences in your life, that molded you into the person you are today.  I don’t pretend that reading all of this makes your fear vanish, but my prayer is that in moments of darkness and uncertainty, it can remind you of the God who places the Holy Spirit inside of you.
