Waterfall

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:39 ESV

God’s love is like…how would you finish that sentence?  It’s a tough thing to do.  So much of our understanding of God is limited by what we know as humans, even though we know God is so much more.  These words above conclude a chapter in Romans about current suffering and challenges in the world of the people receiving this letter.  It is this beautiful promise of God’s love for his people in the midst of all kinds of craziness that they are seeing daily.

I need this verse in my life, reminding me of the love God has for me.  Each day I am reminded of my flaws, my imperfections, my shortcomings, and my sin.  I have no lack of struggles, challenges and stresses all around me.  These verse are not just meant to be a warm fuzzy from God, I hear these verses as a gritty effort to cling to God’s promises when everything around them tells them it’s not true.  How can God love someone like me?  How can God love someone who does the stupid things that I do?  How could God love me after I make the same mistakes over and over again?

It’s amazing that many Christians are well aware of all that scripture speaks about God’s love for us, and the price He paid sending Jesus to die on the cross so that we might be forgiven, but it’s hard to believe that those words, those promises are for us.  Yet this passage in Romans is placed in the face of all of that.  You think that something can break the love God has for you?  Try again…God’s love is greater than all kinds of sin, struggles, hurt, challenges, powers, and people.  God’s love is greater than anything we can ever imagine.  Chris Tomlin takes a shot at explaining what God’s love is like passage in his recent song, “Waterfall”

Your love is like a waterfall, waterfall
Running wild and free
You hear my heart when I call, when I call
Deep calls, too deep
Your love is like a waterfall, waterfall
Raining down on me

So the next time you look in the mirror and think less than positive things about the person you look back at, remember this verse.  Nothing can separate you from the love of God, in fact His love pours out on us in spite of ourselves.  So hear these words as a great encouragement, that no matter how bad your day is going, there is a God who loves you enough that He sent his only son to die so that you can spend eternity with Him.
