Wake Up

Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. (Romans 13:11, 12 ESV)

This weekend is the one of those dreaded time change weekends we experience twice a year.  We go to bed Saturday night and Sunday morning the alarm goes off seemingly an hour earlier, screaming to us Get Up!!!!  Then you have a choice, stay warm and snuggled in bed, or get up as the alarm clock is telling you.

The book of Romans is not writing to give us instruction about how many times you can hit the snooze and still be ok with God, but asks are you awake and fully present in the life you live?  So many people tell me, one day life will be better, one day I will get my life together, I just have to get through this.  I just have to make it past that.  If only I could do A then I would be able to relax.  Romans is reminding us that Jesus died on the cross and rose so that you could live today no matter our circumstances.  Jesus resurrection on Easter meant that our lives could be different today.  Our call to be fully alive started the moment you were born.

We each have busy and challenging seasons of life, but the challenege in these verses is to fully live right now.  Fully live right now because Jesus has already done the heavy lifting dying for our sins on the cross, so that we would not just survive, or go through life half-awake, but fully awake, fully present, fully engaged.
