Too Busy Not To

When you ask someone how they are doing, their normal answer is busy.  We are all busy to various levels.  Our planners are filled with events, programs, fund raisers, and classes, and that’s just our personal calendar.  Then add in work, family, and friends, and you wonder how does it all fit in 24 hours?  The short answer is that it often doesn’t.  We end up having to remove items from our calendar that get pushed out, and often it’s the most important things that get pushed.  We are going to look at four things from scripture that God says no matter how busy you are, that we need to be careful not to get rid of these.

April 27- Pray: 2 Chronicles 7:13-16, 1 John 5:13-15

One challenge of prayer is that no one has to see it happen.  In a results oriented world, it can be easy to leave that off of our busy schedules, because what impact does that make anyway?  Who knows if I prayed or not?  Scripture reminds us that although we might prayer privately the impact of our prayers can completely change circumstances.

May 4- Rest: Deuteronomy 5:12-15

In our 24/7 world who has time to slow down.  We multitask, and purchase products and tools to help us be able to fit more stuff into less time.  What if we were not created to run like that?  What if we are too busy not to slow down and rest?

May 11- Mother’s Day- Be Thankful: Proverbs 31:10-31

Each Mother’s Day we buy Mom a card, take her out for frou-frou food, and then move on the next day.  What if the value of our Mom’s goes far beyond hugs, lunches, art projects and more?  The proverbs will challenge us to remember the value and centrality of thanksgiving, and that we need to offer that gratitude to our Moms, whose impact often goes far beyond what we comprehend.

June 1- Make Space to Listen: 1 John 4:1-10

Scripture tells us that we are supposed to listen to God so we can know what to do.  For most it’s hard to hear your own thoughts let alone to hear God in the midst of all the white noise of our lives.  If we really want to hear God, we will have to make an intentional effort to slow down, and shut out other noise so we can hear God’s still small voice.

June 29- Spend Time Together: Hebrews 10:24-25

Is friendship biblical?  What if God was the inventor of the importance of “friending” people?  We see in Hebrews that we are made to be in community, to spend time together, and to encourage one another daily.
