Do Something

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:19-20

This may be one of the most quoted passages of scripture in Christian churches across the world.  At their core almost every church vision and mission statement leans into these parting words from Jesus to his disciples.  Yet for all the talk, it spends more time on banners than being put into action.  Most of us work off the “someone else will do it assumption.”  Why invite a friend to church, isn’t that the pastor’s job?  Why share about Jesus with others in my life, I send money to a missionary to do that?  Why should my church focus on those in my community?  Aren’t there non-profit who will teach kids to read, and feed the hungry?

If you read Jesus instructions there is a clear tone of action.  Just look at the verbs, GO, TEACH, BAPTIZE.  Jesus is commanding his disciples to DO all of these things, not create an institution that pays others to do it as you watch.  But won’t someone else do it?  I was inspired by Matthew West’s song, “Do Something,” because I think he sums this up well in the lyrics before:

I turned my eyes to heaven, I thought, God why don’t You do something?  He said, “I did I created you.”

If not us, then who; If not me and you

Right now, it’s time for us to do something, if not now, then when?

So when the opportunity to serve, to teach, to share, and represent God in your life, before you say “let someone else do it,” take the chance to do something, God may have created you just for that moment and purpose.
